Passkeys

Add a passkey so you can sign in with your device's fingerprint, face, or PIN instead of typing a password.

Use this page — the Security section of Settings — to add and manage passkeys, so you can sign in with your device's fingerprint, face, or PIN instead of typing a password.

The secret half of a passkey stays on your device, browser, or password manager; TallyFolio never stores it and only holds the public half, which is useless to an attacker on its own. Passkeys also resist phishing: they only work on the real site, so a lookalike page can't steal one.

Before you start

  • Sign in first with your email and password — passkeys are added from inside your account, not from the login page.
  • Have a device with a screen lock (fingerprint, face, or PIN) or a password manager that stores passkeys.
  • Keep your password: it stays available as a fallback sign-in, so a lost device never locks you out.

How to use it

  1. Open the Security section of Settings and choose to add a passkey.
  2. Follow your device's prompt: it asks for your fingerprint, face, or PIN, or offers to save the passkey in your password manager.
  3. Next time you sign in, choose the passkey option on the login page instead of typing your password.
  4. Repeat on other devices you use, or rely on a password manager that syncs passkeys between them.
  5. Remove passkeys you no longer use from the same page — for example after replacing or selling a device.

What affects this page

  • Your device, browser, and password manager — they store the passkey and decide whether the passkey option can be offered at sign-in.
  • Which passkeys you've registered; each one is listed here and can be removed.

What does not affect this page

  • Your financial data — passkeys change how you sign in, nothing about your records.
  • Your password — it keeps working alongside passkeys as the fallback.
  • TallyFolio's servers seeing your biometrics — your fingerprint or face never leaves the device; the app only ever learns that the device approved you.

Common mistakes

  • Registering a passkey on only one device and being stuck when it's unavailable. Add one per device you actually use, and keep your password somewhere safe.
  • Forgetting to remove a passkey after selling or wiping a device. Prune the list when devices change.
  • Expecting to create a passkey before ever signing in. The first sign-in uses email and password; passkeys are added afterward from Settings.

FAQ

The passkey option doesn't appear on the login page. What now?
Try the same browser and device where you registered it, and check that your password manager's passkey support is enabled. If it still doesn't appear, sign in with your email and password (or a magic link) and re-register the passkey from Settings — then remove the old entry.
What if I lose the device with my passkey?
Sign in with your password, then remove the lost device's passkey from the Security settings and register a new one on your replacement device.
Does TallyFolio see my fingerprint or face?
No. The biometric check happens entirely on your device. TallyFolio only receives confirmation that the device approved the sign-in — never the biometric itself.
Can I have more than one passkey?
Yes — register one per device you use, or let a syncing password manager share one across devices. All registered passkeys are listed in Settings.
